The percussion family is often misunderstood by beginning band students. It is not just the “drums”, but instead, many different instruments create the concert percussion section. Students must audition with a band instructor and students who have had previous piano lesson experience will be taken into consideration before other students upon registration.  Percussion requires bass clef skills (left hand of piano) when timpani is studied, and treble clef skills (right hand of piano) when mallet instruments are studied.  Students must be patient, organized, and self-disciplined as they do not play all the time, but their role has a great impact on the group. Students should be very comfortable with their second and third choices in case they do not meet the percussion requirements and/or audition successfully.
